How the Shorts algorithm actually works
YouTube’s Shorts ranking model, distilled from Creator Insider talks and community observations through mid-2026:
- Watch-through rate is the primary signal. Percent of the video watched, averaged across viewers. 40%+ WTR is the threshold where the algorithm starts boosting; 60%+ is where content goes viral. Below 30% effectively caps distribution.
- Loop count (re-watch) is heavily weighted. A Short that gets rewatched signals dense value or a satisfying payoff. Loop-friendly structures (question → wait → surprising answer) benefit disproportionately.
- Swipe-away rate is the killer signal. If viewers swipe away in the first 2 seconds, the video is effectively dead. This is why the hook is doing 60%+ of the algorithmic work.
- Engagement (likes, comments, shares) matters — but less than watch metrics. Engagement helps but doesn’t compensate for weak retention. A 100-comment Short with 20% WTR under-distributes a 0-comment Short with 55% WTR.
- Cross-content compounding.Once one Short hits, YouTube tests your other Shorts on similar audiences. A single viral Short can lift your entire channel’s Shorts distribution for weeks.
